Applique Throw Pillow
For this project..
You will be “sewing on” a design of your choice onto a fabric. That design is made of another fabric.
Look at the next slide to see how to perfectly mix and match patterns.
Pillow Sizes
You can cut your pillow to any shape or size that you’d like.
I would suggest 14” x 14”
However, just keep in mind that you use a ½ inch seam allowance so you will lose about an inch of your shape.
Decide on your pillow size, fold fabric in half, and measure and cut those pieces.
STEP 1: Select your fabric and the word or shape you want to applique
STEP 2: Apply stabilizer to the wrong side of your fabric. Then trace your letters or shape & cut. *Make sure to reverse your letters!
*every layer of your design (if different colors) needs to be cut during this step
STEP 3:
Once all of your letters or shapes are cut, double check that they are the size and shape and there are no mistakes.
STEP 4:
Grab the FRONT piece of your pillow.
Layout your letters shapes on that one piece on right side of your pillow fabric. Use a ruler to make sure your letters are straight. You can layout in your own design, but it needs to demonstrate professional craftmanship.
STEP 5: To applique your letters, set your machine to Stitch Width 5 and Stitch Length ½.
Center your presser foot on the edge of your letter or shape and begin zigzagging around the edge. Go slow so you can maintain control as you outline your letter. Do this for each letter.
STEP 6:
After you’ve appliqued all of your letters, finish your pillow. Place your pillow pieces right sides together. Pin all four sides together, by placing your pins perpendicular to fabric edge.
STEP 7:
Then sew the remaining edges, right sides together, with a 5/8” seam allowance. Made sure to start in the middle of one side and pivot at each corner. Leave a hole large enough for your hand. Take pins out as you get to them.
STEP 8:
Look at each four corners and trim the edges. Turn your pillow right side out. Do this by reaching inside of the pillow and bringing it to the outside and fill with fiber-fill. Make sure to poke out the corners.
STEP 9:
You have a small hole now on the side of your pillow. Use a ladder or invisible stitch to close this hole with a handsewing needle and matching thread.
Yay! You did it!
Fill out a rubric and place the pillow on Sears’ Desk :)
