Supplies needed:
- 1 yard fabric
Cut one 90” cord. Place tape on both ends before cutting so that they don’t fray.
With butcher paper, measure 2 rectangles.
Rectangle one: 16 inches wide x 21 inches tall
Rectangle two: 16 inches wide x 8 inches tall
Label the rectangles.
Fold fabric in half, with the salvages together. Place pattern pieces on fabric with the LONG edge PARALLEL to the selvedge. Pin pieces town. Cut with shears.
Grab pocket piece. Place it wrong side up. Fold the top edge of the pocket over ¼ inch. Place 4 pins in to hold fold in place. Press.
Fold that same edge over ¾ inch. Pin and press again.
Stitch close to the bottom edge of that fold. Use the slit in the presser foot as a guide. (⅛ inch seam allowance). DON’T FORGET TO BACKSTITCH AT THE BEGINNING AND END.
Fold pocket in half crosswise (hamburger style) and crease with iron.
Grab your front piece of your bag. Lay it right side up. Place the pocket on top, at the bottom of the piece, also facing up. The bottom edges of the pocket and the body should match up, and the sewn edge of the pocket is toward the top. Pin 3 times along the crease. Pins should be at right angles
Stitch down the crease line, backstitching at the beginning and end. Remember to remove pins as you sew.
Lay one body piece wrong side up. Measure ½ inch from the top edge of fabric down the side of the bag and fold to the wrong side. Then fold again 1 ½ inch down to make a casing.
Press this folded edge. Then sew with a ¼ inch seam allowance, using your presser foot as a guide down the length of the fold. Don’t forget to backstitch. Repeat step 11 and 12 with the other body piece.
Place the right side of the body pieces together and pin along the sides and bottom. Make sure that the pocket piece is at the bottom.
Grab cording and insert a safety pin into one end of the cord. Insert the safetypin/cording into the casing opening. Push and pull it all the way around through each side once and the back twice, so that both sides of the bag casing have cording hanging out.
Make sure the length of the cords are the same and both sides. Place cords inside of the bag.
Reach in the bag and place the cord where the side seam would be, about two inches from the bottom of the bag. Make sure that the cording sticks out at least an inch, on each side.
Double check and make sure that the cords are NOT in the pockets. They should be on top of the pockets on the inside of your bag.
Using a ⅝ inch seam allowance, sew starting from under the casing, down the side, along the bottom, and up the other side, making sure to pivot at each corner. Make sure to backstitch when you start and a couple of times where the cording sits.
Trim any extra threads inside of your bag. Trim the extra cording. Turn bag right side out and trim threads on outside.
Fill out rubric/evaluation form, insert it in your bag and turn it in.
